The IP lookup tool reports what is publicly known about an IPv4 or IPv6 address: the country and region it is registered to, the network operator, and the autonomous system it belongs to. The lookup is performed by our server through a third-party geolocation provider.

Limitations and things to watch for

  • IP geolocation is an estimate derived from registration and routing data, not a measurement. Country accuracy is generally high; city-level accuracy is often wrong, and it says nothing about where a person is. VPNs, mobile carriers and corporate networks routinely place users far from the reported location.
  • Never use IP location as evidence about an individual, and never use it as a security control on its own.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is IP geolocation?
Country-level accuracy is usually reliable. City-level accuracy is frequently wrong by tens or hundreds of kilometres, because the data reflects where a network block is registered and routed rather than where a device physically is.
Can I find out who a person is from their IP address?
No. An IP address identifies a network connection, not a person. Only the internet service provider holds subscriber information, and they disclose it only in response to lawful process.
Does this tool run in my browser?
No. Your browser cannot query registration databases, so the lookup is made by our server via a third-party provider. The address you enter is sent to that provider. Successful lookups are cached briefly and are not stored in a database.
How do I find my own IP address?
Leave the field empty and submit, or use the dedicated My IP Address tool, which shows the address our server sees for your connection.
